Treatment of vitiligo: the role of superoxide dismutase

Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an antioxidant enzyme which is found naturally in our body. It is one of the most powerful known antioxidants, meaning that it reduces oxidative stress and protects our skin from the damage caused by free radicals. It is, therefore, one of the most effective treatments for vitiligo.

Meladul Gel, one of our solutions for the treatment of vitiligo, contains DISMUTIN® PF, a highly purified, aqueous superoxide dismutase (SOD) solution with an outstanding anti-inflammatory effect produced through biotechnology.

SOD in association with topical treatment with tacrolimus 0.5% reduces oxidative stress in the area (see the picture on how oxidative stress acts), neutralises free radicals and helps to restore cellular homeostasis, i.e. the ability of the cells to maintain a stable internal state by compensating for changes in their environment.

Meladul has no contraindications and causes no drug interactions, so it is recommended for all types of vitiligo patients, as well as people with other types of hypopigmentation, such as that caused by burns or injuries. It is very easy to apply and must be used twice a day every day, waiting 15 minutes after application before exposure to sunlight or UVB radiation.

The epidermis of vitiligo patients contains concentrations of H2O2 which are toxic to melanocytes. This hydrogen hydroxide favours depigmentation in the area due to its “bleaching” power.
Oxidative stress and the build-up of free radicals in the epidermis aggravate the damage to the melanocytes, so the superoxide dismutase helps to protect them.
