According to data handled by the Association of Vitiligo Patients (ASPAVIT), 90% of the 900,000 people affected by vitiligo in Spain do not receive any kind of treatment.

Vitiligo treatment aims to slow the depigmentation process of the skin and to repigment the affected areas. It is a long process that requires constancy and on-going follow-up by the dermatologist. It is estimated that results may appear after between 6 and 24 months of treatment.

In this respect, it is key that the vitiligo patient understands the illness and is able to address it and face it calmly, especially as stress is one of the factors that can aggravate the evolution of the illness.

In cases of focal vitiligo, located mainly on the face, hands, genital area, etc. a combination is recommended of phototherapy with the application of Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) in gel form to achieve repigmentation of affected areas.

In cases of vitiligo that affect wider areas and parts of the body with hair such as the legs, arms and trunk, a combination of photo-sensitizers is recommended in both capsules and gel form (Fenadul) and phototherapy with a narrow-band UVB lamp applied at home.
